Worcester Guide:
Worcester is located by the River Severn and dates back to first century AD when a Roman settlement was formed here. It has a fine combination of both medieval and modern architecture with a beautiful range of Tudor buildings in various locations.
Things to see and do in Worcester
Visit the Commandary, which is close to the River Severn beside Sidbury Lock. The building itself is one to marvel at, being a half-timbered Tudor house which was used in 1651 as headquarters by Charles II at the time of the Battle of Worcester. This battle marked the end of the English civil war where Parliament was victorious over Charles’ forces. The building has undergone some serious renovation with the city’s six period’s being designed in a clear and colourful manner.
Another major attraction of the city is Worcester Cathedral, which is located in one of the most glorious areas of the country in comparison to other cathedrals. Just by the River Severn, the view is magnificent and photogenic to the highest standard. Much of the outer stonework is Victorian as well as the west front and eastern end. However, the development of some modern buildings can from some angles get in the way of a good view. You can also explore what remains of the Benedictine monastery from 680 AD. There is a cloister of some measure as well as walled gardens which give the area a rather warm feeling.
The Worcester Guildhall had the initial purpose of serving as a meeting place for Worcester merchants in the 13th century. It then became a place for civic administration. At present, the hall is a Queen Anne building which began construction in 1722 through the efforts of Thomas White. It is a brick building with some elements of stone in its structure. The entry holds a figure of Queen Anne which is said to have been carved by White himself. The interior is just as interesting as the exterior with some notable works of décor.
Also visit the City Museum and Art Gallery, which the river Severn is the focus of all exhibits, with some emphasis on fossils and other geological artefacts. Within the same building you can also find the Worcestershire Regiment Museum and the Yeomanry Cavalry Museum.
